August is the month for vacation in Italy, so do as the Italian do!
After arriving in Catania's Fontanarossa airport, you will spend the first three nights of the trip at a winery on the slopes of Mt. Etna, Europe's largest active volcano. This uniquely rich and fertile soil gives unique flavor to the region's food and wine. As you relax in the beauty nature, you will enjoy a tasting of these local flavors with a view out to the Mediterranean Sea. We will also taste some of Catania's street food, explore the city's architecture, much of it constructed with rocks cut from the volcano's lava, and finish the afternoon with a relaxing excursion in the Mediterranean Sea.
Along with the end of summer, comes the ripening of many local products, including Sicily's famed pistacchi from the town of Bronte, characterized by their intense green color and also found in many Sicilian pizzas, pastas and desserts. You will spend a day on a local pistacchio farm, able to pick the ripened fruit directly from the plant and then enjoy the flavors at the table.
Once we take the ferry across the Straight of Messina, will will spend the next three nights in Reggio di Calabria, located on the tip of Italy's boot. From here you will have a beautiful view of the sea and the island of Sicily. We will visit the archeological museum and learn about the history of Magna Grecia, spend a day in the hills of Aspromonte, see local folk dancers preform the traditional tarantella and enjoy a gelato with an unrivaled view of Mt. Etna.
